Jan and Shen are the last remaining members of a metalsmith clan, the Ashlands, destroyed at the hands of their most trusted allies. In a world where technology threathens to overthrow the dominion of magic, and religion seeks to crush both, the two orphans try to make a new life and avoid getting caught up in their new home's politics.

Rubicon is an urban myth, modern days Guy Fawkes, real life Batmans. The truth is, when a soldier trains his whole life thinking they'll save the world, only to realize they're helping bring it closer to the abyss, one can hardly expect them to just keep following orders.

In the middle of the twenty first century, ten years after a devastating war that plunged the earth in a nuclear winter, humanity's elites, surviving in an underwater network of habitation modules and bio domes meant to simulate the conditions necessary to support human life, are once again at war. Two habitations, one run by criminal overlords and the other by former CEOs, inventors and pioneers, want to establish their domination over the whole network. In the process, they irrevocably damage the fragile balance of the simulated ecosystem, forcing the automated domes to produce more resilient creatures. Amongst of all of this, David Kolyat, an Engineer in training, and the remaining maintenance personel, must try to keep humanity's last refuge from falling apart, no matter the cost.
